LIKE BEING BACK HOME
THE PORTRAIT Early XX century |
A visitor's comment in our guest book reads: "It's like being back home!"
We thought it was just a saying, but over the last ten months we have had the opportunity to meet many people who had decided to "come back". For them it was an important time as it gave them the opportunity to pay a visit to their ancestors' village and discover their roots. Actually, homesickness has been a topic for emigrants since Greek times when they used to call it "Nostalgia". Reference to nostalgia is often found in emigrants' letters. A typical one of them reads :"...if God keeps me in good health and I'm so lucky to keep my job, in two years time I'll be back." Maybe the same feelings drive many Valchiavennese "home" from all around the world: to Villa di Chiavenna, to Gordona, to Samolaco, to S. Croce, to Chiavenna or to Verceia. Over the last year it was great when we were so lucky to meet in Chiavenna Mr Pasini from Alaska, Mr Iacomella from Australia, Mr Oreggioni from Uruguay, Mrs Giacomini and her family from California and Mr Tam from Idaho (USA). Our next expected visitor is Mr White from Sacramento (California). The visitors keep saying, after leaving, how happy they were to meet us. We can genuinely assure them that we, indeed, are the happy ones to be able to talk with them and to show them around the valley. To us anyone with ties to Valchiavenna is, to some extent, part of our community. Paolo Via |
